During the design phase of the L40, the original L6\/40 tank turret was removed, and the 47\/32 Mod. 1935 anti-tank gun, similar to that used on the \"M\"-series tanks, was installed in the open casemate. The Semovente was notable for its small size; the riveted plate armour used was typical of Italian production of the period, and it had a crew of just two. Despite its clearly inadequate battlefield performance against enemy armour, it continued to be used during the Second World War by Italian forces in Libya, Tunisia and also in the home defence campaign.
