The aircraft's design featured a large high wing and lateral floats, which made it well suited to patrol, search and\u003cbr\u003erescue operations at sea. It was powered by a 900 hp Isotta Fraschini Asso XI engine, giving good range and a top speed of 275 km\/h. The CANT Z.501 began its operational service during the Spanish Civil War but was extensively used by the Regia Aeronautica during the Second World War in the Mediterranean theatre.
