Description

Design of the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle began in the 1970s to provide US Air Force fighter squadrons with an advanced, high-performance jet fighter. The effective and rugged aerodynamic design led to the production of the two-seat, all-weather F-15E Strike Eagle fighter-bomber. The aircraft entered service with the USAF in the late 1980s, replacing the outdated F-111, and its operational roles included ground attack, bombing and interdiction missions. It retained the original F-15's airframe characteristics, such as the twin tailfins, the robust mid-wing and the tandem two-seat cockpit, where the weapon systems officer was seated. From this position, the officer handled the aircraft's route planning, target tracking and electronic countermeasures. The F-15E was deployed in numerous theatres of operation, such as the Desert Shield and Desert Storm campaigns in the early 1990s.
