Description

The HH-53C Jolly Green Giant was developed by Sikorsky as a variant of the heavy CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter. It entered service with the US Air Force in the late 1960s. It was designed to carry out CSAR "search and rescue" missions in combat zones with high operational effectiveness. Compared with the earlier version, it was fitted with an in-flight refuelling probe, additional fuel tanks, reinforced armour and the option of mounting extra defensive armament. Particular emphasis was placed on improving the radio systems, which had to coordinate operational activities with other support aircraft – such as tankers or attack and support helicopters – needed to safely locate downed or missing pilots. It was robust, reliable and had long flight endurance, and was widely used during the Vietnam War.
