Extra catalogue – back again – D-Day 80th anniversary

To meet the logistical needs of US Army landing forces for transferring loads quickly and efficiently from ships to beaches, the American General Motors CCKW-353 2½ ton 6x6 tactical transport truck was designed and built in an amphibious version for this purpose. The basic vehicle components were the same as the GMC truck, with its 4,400 cm3 6-cylinder engine, three differentials and six driven wheels. The DUKW featured a welded hull to make it amphibious, which was then reinforced with horizontal ribs. Its key characteristic, however, was its extraordinary versatility and load capacity. It could carry a payload of 2,400 kg or 25 fully equipped troops. DUKWs were widely deployed in every theatre of war by the US Army, US Marines and the armed forces of several Allied nations. Notably, they took part in many significant WWII beach landings, including the D-Day Normandy landings at Utah and Omaha, as well as at Salerno, Anzio and on the beaches of the Pacific campaign.

The finished model measures 24.1cm.
