Back again – bendable tracks

The Leopard 1 tank, which entered service in the mid-1960s, formed the backbone of the armoured corps in West Germany and in several NATO countries during the "Cold War" period. The Leopard's combat role was of critical importance, as it was at the forefront of engaging the overwhelming number of tanks that could be deployed by the Warsaw Pact armies. It was armed with the reliable 105 mm L7 gun, capable of using various types of ammunition. The A5 version was a significant improvement, adopting a modified turret able to house the new computerised target identification and fire control systems. Composite armour plates made of polycarbonate were also added, markedly increasing protection and resistance to enemy attacks.

The finished model measures 27.3cm
