The Tornado arose from a joint project between Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom to produce a high-performance multi-role combat aircraft. The primary requirement, however, was to develop a "state of the art" modern aircraft capable of carrying out penetrating strike missions at low altitude. This need was met by the development of a twin-engine combat aircraft with a variable-sweep wing. The Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike) was the first version released for the British Royal Air Force, designated GR.1. The Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike), an aircraft ideally suited to strike roles, was the original version used by Flight Squadrons from the three countries that developed the aircraft: the Italian Aeronautica Militare, the German Luftwaffe and the British RAF. The Tornado IDS was used in various scenarios, where it was able to demonstrate its operational effectiveness.

The finished model measures 52.1 cm.
