The 3rd-generation American main battle tank M1 Abrams is the backbone of the armoured divisions of the US Army and US Marine Corps. The Abrams is characterised by its heavy armour (it is one of the heaviest combat vehicles in the world), and also its powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. The tank first entered service in the early 1980s to replace the ageing M-60. It houses a sophisticated computer-controlled fire-control system within its modern armoured hull. The Abrams offers greater crew protection than many of its predecessors, particularly in the design of the separate, heavily protected ammunition storage area at the rear of the tank. It was originally armed with a 105 mm main gun, which was to be updated and replaced by a more modern and powerful 120 mm smoothbore gun. The Abrams has been widely and successfully deployed on operational service in several theatres of war, including recent conflicts in the Middle East and Afghanistan.
