Among the various provisions of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 was a severe restriction on German naval construction. Small vessels were not covered by these provisions, which led to the development of motor torpedo boats from the late 1920s. The design was based on a civilian yacht, modified to carry two torpedoes: S-1. Development of the design continued until, in its most advanced models, it reached 35 metres in length with a weight of 100 tons. Even the space for secondary weapons was gradually increased. The construction used composite material with aluminium beams and wooden planking. The characteristic armoured deckhouse appeared with the S-100 model and was a necessary response to the increasing Allied air superiority and the intensified low-level air attacks being carried out. The boats were mainly used to attack Allied ships in the coastal areas of the British Isles, but were also used for operations in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, usually under cover of darkness. From 1943, after large parts of the Kriegsmarine had been either destroyed or immobilised, these motor torpedo boats were among the few vessels still afloat and able to carry out military operations, which exposed them to a gradually increasing number of engagements and the resulting heavy losses.
