Description

Design work on the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle began in the 1970s to equip the fighter squadrons of the US Air Force with an advanced, high-performance jet fighter. The effective and rugged aerodynamic layout led to the production of the two-seat "all-weather" F-15E Strike Eagle fighter-bomber. When it entered service with the USAF in the late 1980s, replacing the ageing F-111, its operational roles included ground attack, bombing and interdiction missions. It retained the flight design features of the original F-15, such as the twin tail fins, the sturdy centre wing and the tandem two-seat cockpit, with the Weapon Systems Officer seated in the rear. From this position, the officer handled route planning, target tracking and electronic countermeasures. The F-15E was deployed to several operational theatres, such as the Desert Shield and Desert Storm campaigns of the early 1990s.
