The Bf 109 played an important role in every operation of the Second World War. The prototype first flew on 28 May 1935. The single-seat fighter had a 1,435 hp DB 605 engine, giving it a maximum speed of 684 km/h at 7,400 m. Production totalled around 35,000 units.
