The AC Cobra established Carroll Shelby's reputation as a brilliant sports car designer. In the early '60s, for the AC Cobra, he took the two-seat British sports car AC Ace and fitted it with a 4.7-litre Ford V8 engine. The result was a thoroughbred racing car with brutal acceleration. In 1964, it set a speed record for road-legal vehicles of 293 km/h.
