From the late eighth century AD, Vikings originating in Scandinavia regularly appeared in Britain and on the European mainland on plundering expeditions in their longships. These highly seaworthy warships, around 20 metres (66 feet) in length, had a bow at both ends, allowing them to be beached and/or launched in either direction. The shallow draught of just 1.5 metres (5 feet) also allowed the Vikings to sail or row up inland waterways and rivers, enabling them to raid areas deep inland. With these fast (a speed of 20 knots) and highly manoeuvrable warships, also known as "Dragon Boats", the Vikings ventured as far as Iceland, Greenland and even North America, as excavations at settlements have proven.
