1:50 Marie Jeanne -Wooden hull

Built in the late 19th century. It is a "dundee" of 50–60 tons, fitted with many sails (requiring 20–25 tons of ballast) and a crew of 12 men. Tuna fishing requires solid boats that sit well in the water and are fairly fast.

Tuna fishing is a very demanding occupation, requiring strong, seaworthy boats that are also very fast. Many types of boat were originally used, but some were too clumsy, and “chalupper” of around 20 tons were not strong enough, so the following type of boat was developed: a “dundee” of around 50–60 tons, rigged with many sails and with a crew of 12 men.
The white tuna are caught using lines. The tuna boats are fitted with “tangons”, long poles over 20 metres long. They are placed on each side of the mainmast and lowered on both sides while the boat is fishing. Each tangon normally carries 7 lines connected by rope, which allows the fishermen to haul the tuna aboard without changing the tangons’ position. Two other lines are fixed to the stern, and often a third – a very long one – is fixed to the top of the mainmast. The lines end in a so-called “avançon” made of brass wire, to which the fishhook is attached. The bait is artificial, as the white tuna is very greedy. The bait is, for example, made from white hair with a little corn straw.
