1:33 - S/S Hjejlen Dampskib / Steamer wooden hull

The paddle steamer Hjejlen was inaugurated on 24 June 1861, when King Frederik VII sailed on the steamboat from Himmelbjerget to Silkeborg. Baumgarten & Burmeister – later Burmeister & Wain – built the ship. This yard had previously built 2 steamships, and by the standards of the time Hjejlen was a technical marvel; the fact that the engine installed back then still sits in the steamship today is clear proof of the quality of the work. The power of the engine gives a sailing speed of 8 knots per hour. Hjejlen was originally fitted with a tall, handsome mast as was customary, and apart from this adornment the ship was otherwise flush from bow to stern, as the wheelhouse and roof are of a much more recent date. In 1871, when the railway line was completed to Silkeborg, the mast was removed and the funnel was fitted so that it could be folded down when the ship passed under the railway bridge, and a good many changes to the superstructure took place after this. Sun awnings were fitted, later replaced by a fixed roof, and so on, and the Hjejlen kit is designed from the corrected drawings, so that the finished model is a faithful replica of Hjejlen as she sails today on her regular route on the Silkeborg lakes.
