Alongside the Tirpitz, the Bismarck was the German Navy's flagship, the largest German warship, with a displacement of 50,900 tonnes and a crew of 2,092. Commissioned on 24 August 1940, she left port on 18 May 1941 for Operation Rheinübung (“Rhine Exercise”). Together with Prinz Eugen, she was spotted early by British reconnaissance aircraft. In the engagement with Hood on 24 May 1941, the latter was sunk by Bismarck. After a long chase, Bismarck was struck by an aircraft-launched torpedo on 26 May 1941 and intercepted by the British battleships King George V and Rodney. On 27 May 1941, Bismarck was scuttled by her own crew 490 km from the French coast.
