Description

Tamiya 1/24 Morris Mini Cooper Racing

Tamiya is re-releasing item no. 24130 with updated decals, new instructions and new packaging. The Morris Mini arrived on the market in October 1959 and broke with the car design of its day. With a two-box body shape, it fitted four people into a compact car of around 3 metres, with the engine at the front and front-wheel drive. The first engine was 848 cc and 34 hp, enough for 115 km/h.

Four large adults could sit comfortably, and the patented "Hydrolastic" independent four-wheel suspension from 1964, which replaced the earlier compact rubber cone system, was another fine innovation. The well-balanced car also did well on the race track, and British racing legend John Cooper tuned the engine and launched it as the Morris Mini Cooper.

From 1961 came a series of developments, with a 997 cc and later a 998 cc engine in the Cooper, in 1963 a Cooper S with 1,071 cc and 67.5 hp, and in 1964 the popular 1275 with 75 hp, together with a special 970 cc racing version. The competition versions of the 1275S and 970S were called "Works Minis", and the 1275S got a 1,293 cc engine with 91 hp to suit the 1,300 cc class. The racing Mini dominated races in 1964 and 1965, won the 1,300 cc class in the British BSCC championship in 1967, the European Touring Car Championship in 1968 and the BSCC title again the same year. A true motorsport gem!
