Description

The Sturmgeschütz IV was developed on the chassis of the medium Panzer IV tank to provide the German army with an assault gun that could effectively serve as a tank destroyer in the later stages of the Second World War. The StuG IV was fitted with a StuK 40 75mm L/48 high-velocity gun installed in a casemate, protected by armoured plating, capable of penetrating the armour of larger enemy armoured vehicles. Issued to units in the first months of 1944, it frequently supplemented and replaced the StuG III assault gun, which had seen a sudden drop in production in 1943 due to increasingly frequent Allied bombing raids on German industrial areas. The widely used StuG IV was employed by Wehrmacht armoured units and anti-tank detachments, where, thanks to its low profile, it proved particularly difficult to identify.
