On 16 December 1944, the German army launched a major offensive through the dense Ardennes forest in Belgium, codenamed "Wacht am Rhein". The town of Bastogne, a crucial crossroads and important logistics hub, was one of the primary objectives of the strategic plan. The Belgian town and its surrounding areas were surrounded by German forces, effectively isolating a large number of American troops in the pocket. These troops withstood repeated enemy attacks for several days in adverse weather and environmental conditions. The resistance of the 101st Airborne Division, the "Screaming Eagles", was legendary. On 26 December, the siege was lifted by a counter-offensive from several armoured divisions of the American Third Army under the command of General George Smith Patton.
