The twin-engine Fokker F-27 Friendship was developed during the fifties by the Dutch aircraft manufacturer to provide a worthy successor to the old, traditional piston-engine Douglas DC-3, in use since the Second World War. The Fokker F-27 immediately achieved good commercial success in both civilian and military use, and was even produced under licence in the USA. Thanks to its two 2,250 hp Rolls-Royce turboprop engines, the Fokker was able to reach a maximum speed of 460 km/h. Since the start of production, it has been adopted by numerous airlines that found it the best solution for short-haul routes. The introduction of two turboprop engines, compared with traditional piston engines, reduced vibration and provided improved comfort on board. The aircraft was highly versatile and was widely used for cargo transport, troop transport duties and maritime patrol.
