Description

The Me-323 "Gigant" was one of the largest transport aircraft built during the Second World War. It was developed to meet the Luftwaffe's specific needs, following the expansion of supply lines, for transporting troops and materials over long distances. Originally developed from a glider, it was fitted with six radial engines mounted on the leading edge of the wing, capable of delivering sufficient power for fully loaded flight operations. The huge fuselage was able to transport troops - more than 120 men - supplies, artillery pieces and light vehicles. Its large transport capacity compromised its top speed, which only just exceeded 240 km/h. It was used on the North African and Tunisian fronts to supply the Afrika Korps from bases in Sicily, as well as on the Russian front. It is considered a milestone in the history of transport aircraft.
