1:75 Norske Løve - Wooden hull

The model of the ship of the line Norske Løve, which was designed by master shipwright F.M. Krabbe (1725–96) and whose construction was carried out at the Navy's shipyard at Nyholm near Copenhagen under the direction of master shipbuilder Andreas Holm.

She was given build no. 35. The keel was laid in May 1764, and the launch took place on 30 April 1765. She was completed and fully equipped on 10 October 1767. Norske Løve was built as no. 2 in a series of 3. The other two in the series were Printz Friederich and Dronning Caroline Mathilde (later renamed Øresund in 1772). The ship is named after the Norwegian lion in the Danish-Norwegian coat of arms. The ship's length was 167 (Danish) feet over the stems, the greatest beam was 45 feet, and the draught fore and aft was 18 feet 9 inches and 20 feet respectively. She had a standard crew of 667 men, and her armament was 70 iron cannons, distributed as 26 x 24-pounders on the lower deck, 26 x 18-pounders on the middle deck, and 18 x 8-pounders on the upper deck. Until 1780, Danish-Norwegian ships of the line were tarred a very dark brown colour. After this time they were painted black with pale yellow gun-strakes (the so-called “Nelson look”). The decks were light wood-coloured, the gun carriages red. The ornamentation, carried out by the sculptor C. Møllerup, evokes thoughts of Norway. On the stern, a fisherman and a farmer are seen at the outer edges, symbolising Norway's two most important trades, agriculture and fishing. The ship was used as a guard ship in Øresund and other Danish waters. Thus, in 1789, she was fitted out as a guard ship to protect Russian ships in Danish waters.

In 1779, the ship underwent a major overhaul, and in 1795, after being razeed to a block ship, she was used to house homeless families following the great fire of Copenhagen that same year. In 1798 she was struck from the Navy's list entirely. Up to 1814, Norske Løve was a frequently used ship's name and was carried by several ships in the joint Danish-Norwegian fleet. Well known, for instance, is Norske Løve 1665–79, of which a contemporary ivory model exists. Also worth mentioning is Norske Løve, launched 1735 and decommissioned 1764, which should not be confused with the ship of the line depicted by this model. The model of Norske Løve has been developed on the basis of the preserved original construction drawings.
