Manfred von Richthofen – 'the Red Baron' – and his red Fokker triplane made history during the First World War. The Dr.I arrived on the Western Front in June 1917 after a long test phase and approval from the flying ace himself. It was the most manoeuvrable aircraft of its time, with a high rate of climb: the 110 PS Oberursel rotary engine gave a top speed of 193 km/h and a climb to 3000 m in six minutes, and two Spandau machine guns were mounted in front of the cockpit.

All the pilots in Richthofen's group flew red triplanes. Although the Dr.I was withdrawn from the Western Front at the end of 1917, the Red Baron kept flying the type and shot down a total of 80 enemy aircraft before he himself was shot down in April 1918.
