The Vought Corsair was one of the most unusual, yet also most successful, naval aircraft of the Second World War. Feared by its Japanese opponents, who nicknamed her "Whispering Death", she fought her way across the Pacific skies in 1943-1945 and scored a record number of kills: 2,140 enemy aircraft destroyed against 189 losses of her own. The Corsair's combined firepower consisted of six 12.7mm Browning machine guns. Her distinctive bent wing gave her a prominent recognition feature for ground forces, who called her the "Sweetheart of Okinawa". The F4U-1A was the first production series, with many modifications. Top speed 671 km/h (416 mph). The Vought Corsair was one of the most unusual, yet also most successful, naval aircraft of the Second World War.
