1851: In response to a challenge from the Royal Yacht Squadron, the schooner America takes part in the Hundred Guinea Cup race, a 53-mile course around the Isle of Wight. She easily beats the 14 British ships and receives the Hundred Guinea Cup trophy. On 25 August, none other than Queen Victoria herself visits the ship. America proudly returns home and presents the trophy to the New York Yacht Club, which is later renamed the America’s Cup.
