3D mechanical wooden puzzle from Ugears – build it yourself without glue or extra tools!

The Tower Windmill from Ugears is more than a mechanical puzzle.

It is an exciting adventure into the history of old England. The model is based on Chesterton Windmill, a cylindrical 17th-century stone tower windmill built outside the village of Chesterton, Warwickshire.
The windmill was built around 1632-33 and restored between 1965 and 1974, and today it is the oldest tower mill in England that has kept any of its working parts.

This Ugears model, designed in a "Victorian steampunk skeleton" style, is based on the Chesterton prototype. When they spin fast, the aerodynamic twisted sails create quite a strong wind. It also works the other way round: blowing air at the sails makes them spin. Use a fan to show clearly how real windmills work.

The model is powered by a removable rubber-band motor. With the motor removed, the windmill can run in a manual mode, letting you observe and study the fascinatingly complex mechanism in detail. The rubber motor drives the sails via a screw conveyor (worm feeder) and gear transmission. The gear transmission design includes a flexible joint – the type of chain drive assembled from many small links. A full chain drive made of plywood has never been used in Ugears models before. The rotating base of the curved tower looks like a spiral staircase and is part of the screw conveyor, which is a main part of the model's mechanism.

The Ugears Windmill model kit is made from sustainably sourced high-quality wood and has everything you need for assembly. The quality of the parts is top-notch: a laser method is used to cut the pieces from a plywood sheet, giving precise tolerances. The parts are pressed out of the boards and assembled to create a complete model. Like all other Ugears models, the Tower Windmill comes with step-by-step, full-colour, easy-to-follow instructions and needs neither glue nor special tools to be built into a working windmill.
