  • Dive into augmented reality and interact directly with the variator.

The variator is a device that transfers and adjusts the engine's torque by changing the gear ratio. The gear ratio can be changed automatically, manually or within a preset programme. The term most drivers and car enthusiasts know better is Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT. With the Ugears Variator model from the STEM lab collection you can learn and understand one of the most important parts of a car without getting engine oil on your hands!

The variator's design and functions

The mechanical variator in the Ugears STEM lab collection is a fully working wooden replica of a belt-driven friction cone CVT. A cone CVT varies the drive ratio by moving a wheel or belt up and down along the axis of the conical roller. In the Ugears Variator model, the belt, driven manually via the reduction gear, transfers the rotation to the driven cone pulleys. Use the transmission fork to change gear and watch how the speed of the driven cone pulley falls or rises while the speed of the drive cone stays the same.

Thanks to the model's open design you can see the whole process and get a deeper insight into the mechanisms behind it.

Like all other Ugears models, the model kit comes with a detailed user manual/assembly guide, and everything you need to build it – and learn more – is included in the pack.
It does not get any easier.

No glue or special tools are needed.
